Deep Violet, Stepped-Growth Fluorite with Calcite – Summit Cleft, Weißeck, Austria

A fascinating Alpine Fluorite specimen from the famous Summit Cleft of Weißeck, distinguished by its extraordinary crystal architecture, intense violet coloration and beautiful association with pale Calcite.

At the heart of this remarkable specimen lies a densely intergrown arrangement of substantial, deep-violet Fluorite crystals. Their exceptionally dark crystal faces appear almost blackish purple, while translucent edges and thinner areas reveal luminous violet hues and delicate lilac tones.

Particularly impressive is the pronounced stepped-growth structure of the crystal faces. Numerous subtly offset growth terraces, geometric depressions and finely developed cubic features give the Fluorites an almost architectural appearance. The closely intergrown crystals create a wonderfully three-dimensional composition, revealing fascinating new details from different viewing angles.

A beautiful contrast is provided by the pale Calcite crystallisation along one side of the specimen. The whitish to delicately champagne-coloured, partly translucent crystals display lively reflections and form an elegant visual counterpoint to the intensely coloured Fluorite. Their intricate arrangement further enhances the natural beauty of this remarkable mineral association.

The variety of crystal surface textures is especially captivating. While some Fluorite faces appear comparatively smooth, others display pronounced growth structures, stepped elevations and delicate surface irregularities. This fascinating interplay of different crystal textures gives the specimen considerable mineralogical and aesthetic interest.

The famous Summit Cleft, or Gipfelkluft, is situated at approximately 2,670 metres above sea level, just below the 2,711-metre summit of Weißeck in Austria’s Radstädter Tauern mountains. This remote Alpine locality has been renowned for decades for its exceptional Fluorite crystallisations. The remarkable colour zoning, complex growth habits and distinctive stepped crystal surfaces make Fluorites from this locality particularly appealing to discerning collectors.
