This specimen features excellently crystallized, softly yellow calcite crystals beautifully developed on a brown limonite matrix. The calcite shows well defined crystal forms with a pleasant luster, creating an elegant contrast to the earthy, iron-rich host rock. The locality belongs to one of the oldest mining districts in Europe, where calcite and various raw materials were already extracted in antiquity. Mining activities in this area also led to the discovery of Lower Saxony’s largest cave, the famous Iberg Dripstone Cave (Iberger Tropfsteinhöhle) near Bad Iburg, which remains one of the Harz region’s most important and popular tourist attractions to this day.
