A first-class, classic specimen from a historically significant site: the Wolkenhügel mine near Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains. Mining for barite (baryte) there was finally discontinued in the summer of 2007 after well over a century, making such specimens highly sought-after relics of German mining history.
This specimen exhibits the parallel-grown, coarsely tabular "chisel spar" typical of this region. The individual barite crystals are intergrown in a fan-like to comb-like pattern and possess the characteristic sharp-edged terminations. The piece displays a beautiful milky-white to cream-colored base tone. Particularly attractive is the zoned, yellowish to honey-brown hue along the growth surfaces, which is caused by minute natural inclusions – mostly iron oxides such as limonite.
An important mineralogical detail is revealed by examining the crystal faces: they are partially covered with numerous tiny limonite pseudomorphs after likely pyrite or marcasite, which grew on the barite as a later hydrothermal formation phase and lend the specimen an interesting contrast. The underside of the specimen also shows a typical, dark matrix rock of the gangue, which perfectly rounds off the authentic character of this classic Harz Mountains specimen.
Size: 12.5 x 10.0 x 8.0 cm
Locality: Wolkenhügel Mine, Harz, Göttingen District, Lower Saxony, Germany
In crystal healing, barite is considered a powerful protective and grounding stone, primarily strengthening psychological boundaries and protecting against stress and negative external influences. On a mental level, it is said to promote concentration, resolve confusion, and bring greater clarity. Physically, it is traditionally believed to have a harmonizing effect on the nervous system and brain, which is why it is often used for chronic fatigue.
