Unusual pitch-black iron-rich siderite crystals (ferrosiderite) of exceptional quality, displaying remarkably sharp crystal faces and a striking metallic luster. Their intense black coloration reflects a particularly high iron content, giving these crystals a far more dramatic appearance than the typical brown to honey-colored siderites commonly known from many classic localities.
This specimen originates from a discovery made around the early 2000s near Stolberg in the Harz Mountains, Germany, a historic mining region with centuries of metalliferous mining tradition. The Harz district is renowned for its complex hydrothermal mineralization, where iron-bearing carbonate minerals such as siderite frequently occur in association with the region’s polymetallic ore veins.
Crystals from this find are especially notable for their unusually sharp, well-developed rhombohedral forms and the rare, almost metallic sheen that enhances their aesthetic appeal. Material of this quality and color is seldom encountered, making these ferrosiderite crystals a particularly distinctive example from the Stolberg area and a noteworthy piece for collectors interested in classic Harz mineralization.
