This manganese-bearing halite specimen from Bleicherode, combined with golden gypsum crystals, displays a breathtaking UV fluorescence resembling a fiery explosion.
It originates from the now-sealed crystal chamber at a depth of 700 meters.
The Bleicherode potash and salt mine, founded in 1899 following potash discoveries in 1888, became a significant site during World War II for the underground relocation of V2 rocket production from Peenemünde after Allied bombing raids.
While the main assembly of the V2 took place in the nearby Kohnstein tunnels under Mittelwerk GmbH using forced labor from prisoners of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp, the deep caverns of Bleicherode were used for storage and armaments production under forced labor conditions.
After the war, Soviet specialists were captured and contributed to advancing the Soviet rocket program. The role of the mine highlights the desperate underground industrialization efforts of the Nazi regime during total war.
Manganese content in the halite produces an intense red-orange fluorescence under UV light, further enhanced by the honey-colored gypsum crystals on the halite matrix. These rare specimens from the sealed crystal chamber are therefore highly sought after by collectors.
