This specimen is a fascinating document of the world-famous Rammelsberg mine near Goslar in the Harz Mountains, which ceased operations in 1988. It displays the layered mineralization typical of this location, known as copper banding ore, which was formed by cyclical deposition of metal sulfides on the Devonian seabed around 400 million years ago. Chalcocite forms the dark, lead-gray to bluish-black sections and represents the enormous copper content of these ores. In contrast, the pyrite stands out clearly with its light, brassy-gold bands and fine-grained phenocrysts. The dense, finely striated texture of this specimen is a result of the Variscan orogeny, during which the soft ore deposits were plastically deformed and folded under high pressure. Since mining at Rammelsberg ended permanently after more than a millennium, this banded ore with such clear structures is a highly sought-after classic in any historical mineral collection.
