Marcasite & Schalenblende - Reocin Mine, Spain

This 7 cm hand specimen is an absolute rarity and a fascinating geological feature from a historically significant site. The Reocín Mine was the largest stratigraphic zinc-lead deposit in carbonate rock in Spain and, until its closure in 2003, was considered one of the world's largest deposits of Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) minerals. While the mine is primarily known among collectors for its highly lustrous, metallic-shimmering marcasite aggregates in cock's comb habitus combined with snow-white dolomite, which also aesthetically characterize the top of this specimen, a view of the side and underside reveals the true treasure of this piece.

The marcasite growth here is based on a pronounced matrix of finely banded schalenblende. This rhythmic, undulating intergrowth of sphalerite and wurtzite, together with crystals of galena, is extremely unusual for Reocín in its clarity and quality. Although it was a gigantic lead-zinc deposit, the ore was mostly mined in massive quantities; aesthetically zoned schalenblende remained the absolute exception. As a schalenblende source, Reocín is therefore largely unknown and ranks far behind classic European deposits like Bleiberg (Austria) or Olkusz (Poland) in the public consciousness.

Since the mine has been closed for over two decades, no new material is being extracted. From the beginning, only a handful of the finest schalenblende specimens from Reocín existed among experts. The interplay of the typical marcasite splendor on the rare schalenblende base makes this specimen a genetic representation of the deposit and a true rarity for discerning local collectors.
