A true rarity from Baia Sprie (historically Felsőbánya) in northern Romania. This legendary site in the volcanic arc of the Carpathians is world-renowned for its complex hydrothermal vein systems, which over centuries produced an enormous wealth of sulfide minerals. In the cooler, near-surface zones of these veins, arsenic sulfides were deposited during the late stages of mineralization.
The absolute highlight of this specimen is undoubtedly the rare, botryoidal orpiment. While this mineral is usually associated with intensely golden-yellow, flaky aggregates, this piece displays an absolute specialty and historical peculiarity of the deposit: fascinating, almost velvety, olive- to greenish-yellow balls. These spherical forms testify to a very calm, uniform crystallization from a supersaturated solution. They sit atop a carpet of white, highly textured dolomite, which provides an excellent, high-contrast background and perfectly showcases the orpiment.
While the small, stem-like realgar crystals already show signs of weathering and visually recede into the background in favor of the orpiment, they are invaluable as a genetic indicator for this stage. They document the original chemistry of the vein, as they crystallized from the same arsenic-rich solutions at the same time. For a systematic regional or classic collection, this specimen, due to its unusual morphology and the rarity of the spherical orpiment for Baia Sprie, is an absolutely exclusive and scientifically remarkable specimen.
